What Canadians need to know

-7°C

When to switch

All-season rubber stiffens below ~7°C. Winter tire compound stays pliable, biting into snow and ice.

3PMSF

Three-peak snowflake

Look for the mountain-and-snowflake symbol on the sidewall. It's the Transport Canada standard for true winter tires.

4 of 4

All four corners

Mixing winter and all-season tires unbalances handling. Always change all four — even on AWD vehicles.

Steel wheels for winter — why bother?

Most GTA drivers run a dedicated winter wheel set — usually steel — for three reasons. First, seasonal swaps stop using up tire mounting service every six months. Second, road salt and grit pit alloy finishes; cheap steel wheels take the abuse without showing it. Third, the total cost is recovered in 2-3 seasons of avoided mounting/balancing fees.

Every winter steel wheel we stock for vehicle search is hub-centric — the centre bore matches your vehicle's hub exactly, so the install is vibration-free without hub rings.

Winter tire FAQ

Are winter tires required by law in Ontario?

Winter tires are not mandatory in Ontario (unlike Quebec, where they are required Dec 1 to Mar 15), but most Ontario insurers offer a discount when you install them. They are strongly recommended once temperatures drop below 7°C.

Can I run winter tires year-round?

No. Winter compound wears rapidly above 10°C — you'll lose tread life within a single summer and get worse dry-pavement grip than an all-season. Swap to all-seasons (or summers) when temperatures stay above 7°C consistently.

Do I need new TPMS sensors for winter wheels?

Depends on your vehicle. Most 2008+ cars with direct TPMS need a sensor in each wheel. Some shops re-use the OE sensors at every swap; others install a second TPMS set in the winter wheels for faster turnaround. We stock both standalone wheels and pre-assembled TPMS-ready winter packages.

Can I size down for winter?

Often yes — a smaller-diameter wheel with a taller sidewall (a "minus-size" setup) improves snow traction and lets you fit cheaper, more common tire sizes. Search by your vehicle on this site and we'll show every diameter that fits hub-centric.
